| Competency based management (CBM) is a way of managing human resources (HR) functions that focuses on the competencies (observable knowledge, skills, abilities, motivations or traits) defined in terms of the behaviours needed for successful job performance. Results at a job level are linked to organizational success because CBM aligns job competencies with organizational goals and standardizes and integrates all HR activities to support those goals. Employees are hired, promoted and developed according to these competencies. The approach is founded on the fact that when HR processes are aligned with organizational objectives, there are improvements in performance throughout the organization.
